Happy Pancake Day

I was reminded of this whilst cooking pancakes for the family this morning. We transformed our own room two years ago and we have achieved exactly what we set out.
Our previous kitchen was small, cold and functional. It worked, it looked fine (perhaps a little dark) but it simply wasn’t the right solution for our family. We used the room to cook and then dash out to sit in the dining room to eat, trying to warm our feet up. We would joke about opening the fridge door to let some warmth in.
We made the decision to extend and open up the kitchen into an open plan room, which made such a difference to our family time. Underfloor heating with Karndean Flooring makes it comfortable year round. We now had the space to include a dining table. We now involve the kids with cooking and baking, or they draw or do homework while in the same room so no more running between rooms to check on what they are doing.
The room is still practical; we rearranged our storage with tall larder units, plenty of base cupboards and a tambour unit to hide away some of the clutter (important in a multifunctional room). A breakfast bar peninsular adds a great social touch too.
And importantly, on a day like today, the children get to sit and watch the pancakes being tossed (and sometimes dropped). And that in a nutshell is our Kitchen Culture – simple family time and a room to be enjoyed.
